Crime reports

Friday, July 23, 2010

The rear door of Lighthouse Baptist Church on West Church Street was broken in on July 11 and about $30 that a Sunday School class had been saving for a mission trip was taken. The estimated cost of repair to the door and doorframe is $400.

"I know that times are hard but to break into a church, this is beyond belief," said church member Jim Hammer. Lewisburg Police Detective Sgt. David Henley said Wednesday they had no suspects at that time.

Police were called when a woman attempted to cash five $950 MoneyGrams at Wal-Mart on July 14. The manager found that the MoneyGrams had already been cashed. This appears to have been a scam perpetrated by a person from Nigeria who the woman met on MySpace.

In a similar scam, Lewisburg Post Master Fran Zeller reported that counterfeit postal money orders are showing up all around the mid-state.

"The average customer would not know they are fake," Zeller said. She said the scam artist seems to be targeting the elderly and disabled, sending money orders and asking the victim to cash them at a bank, take what they need, and send the rest of the money back. When the bank finds out the postal money order is a fake, they demand the money back from the customer.

Zeller said a woman brought three $950 postal money orders to the Post Office yesterday because she suspected they were no good. The evidence has been sent to the Postal Inspector.
