Catalpa News

Hello again, hope everyone is doing fine. So sorry that I missed getting any news in last week. But it was a crazy week. Some of you know that I (Sheila Upchurch) have been writing the news for Mama since she had a stroke back in March. I was on my way to write the news last week when I got the call that Mama had fallen and they were waiting on an ambulance. Thus started a long night, with a trip to St. Thomas and a lot of questions with no answers. We finally found out that she had a couple of seizures and had not had another stroke. She spent three days in St. Thomas and was then transferred to Merihil on Thursday afternoon. She is bruised and sore, but is improving some every day. We hope she won't have to be there very long.

We all want to thank everyone who has sent cards, called, and visited her. It has helped lift her spirits; especially when last Wednesday was her birthday and she had to spend it in the hospital. Please keep her and Daddy in your prayers.

I am very behind on birthdays this month. Happy birthday to Jesse Head, Oct 4; Juanita Pack, Matthew Tate, and Mike Murdock, Oct. 13; Nicky Foster, Oct. 16; Kim Murdock, Oct 18; Marijo Bean and Angie Taylor, Oct. 28; Logan Pack, Oct. 29. Also, Happy Anniversary to Joe and Marijo Bean on Oct. 28.

Congratulations to Fain Watson and Jeremy Spray on their recent marriage. They were married last Saturday. We were glad to have Matt and Straton Watson with us for church Sunday morning.

Sincere sympathy to Karen and J.D. Walker over the death of his brother, George. Please keep them in your prayers as it was quite unexpected. Also, we send our sympathy to Dale Daniel at the death of his mother, Audelene, a few weeks ago. Dale is also recovering from a knee replacement and asked us to keep him in our prayers.

Jeff Pack brought us two very fine lessons Sunday morning and Larry Hastings brought the evening sermon. We appreciate Larry volunteering to speak. We have enjoyed having Jim and Helen Hatfield visit with us the last two Sundays. We hope they will be able to come back often. Bro. Carpenter and Alice were off this past Sunday since Auburn had a night game. Congratulations Auburn on a BIG win Saturday. Hope things are just as good this Saturday when Tennessee plays Alabama. GO BIG ORANGE!

Charlie Pack and the other members of the Cornersville Youth Football League have played their last games of the regular season. These boys have played very hard and are probably the future stars for Cornersville High. Thanks for a great season, boys.

Jeff Pack from Catalpa attended Men's Day at Lone Oak Church of Christ on Saturday. Maybe next year we will have more from Catalpa able to go.

Well it's getting late and the Titans play tonight (Monday) so I will get on with our poem of the week:

A Sure Way To A Happy Day

Happiness is something we create in our minds;

It's not something you search for and seldom find.

It's just waking up and beginning the day

By counting our blessings and kneeling to pray.

It's giving up thoughts that breed discontent

And accepting what comes as a gift heaven-sent.

It's giving up wishes for things we have not

And making the best of whatever we've got.

It's knowing that life is determined for us

And pursuing our tasks without fret, fume, or fuss.

For it's by completing what God gives us to do

That we find real contentment and happiness, too.
