Council race is on going

Friday, February 4, 2011

At least one city resident has filed a petition to run for Lewisburg City Council in the May 3 election.

He's Jeff Payne of 972 Sumerset Circle, according to one of the Marshall County Election Office employees.

Payne would be challenging Councilman Robin Minor for the 5th Ward seat on the council.

Minor has picked up a petition of candidacy to run for re-election to his second term, but he had not filed the petition as of Wednesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Councilman Quinn Brandon Stewart, the 1st Ward's representative on the city's legislative panel, has also obtained a petition to the Election Commission asking its panelists to place her name on the printed ballot. Stewart hadn't filed her petition by Wednesday afternoon.

The deadline for candidates to file their petitions is noon on Feb. 17, now less than two weeks away.

There are 1,065 registered voters in Ward 1, and 1,013 people registered to vote in Ward 5, according to election office records.

Voters in Ward 1 cast ballots on Election Day at the Lewisburg Gas Department on North Ellington Parkway, and Election Day-voting for residents of Ward 5 is at Westhills Elementary School.
