Labor Department to screen applicants for Nissan jobs

Friday, April 15, 2011

Jobseekers in Marshall and neighboring Middle Tennessee counties are invited to apply to Yates Services for positions located at Nissan's Vehicle Assembly Plant in Smyrna.

"These are well-paying jobs," Tennessee Labor and Workforce Development Commissioner Karla Davis said. "The company plans to hire for numerous warehouse and production support positions during the next year and a half."

The job fair is scheduled for Saturday, April 16, at the Murfreesboro Career Center, 1313 Old Fort Parkway, Murfreesboro, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Tennessee's Department of Labor and Workforce Development is helping Yates Services recruit people for these jobs, Davis said.

The commissioner's announcement indicated a range of hourly wages that would be paid. The average of that pay range is $14.87.

Position openings are for production support and warehousing. Applicants must score minimum levels on the Career Readiness Certificate assessment. Assistance on such issues may be obtained at the Career Center at Columbia State Community College in Lewisburg on South Ellington Parkway. The CRC indicates a worker's ability in math, locating information, and reading for information.

Applicants for the jobs at Nissan must:

* Be at least 18 years old,

* Have a valid driver's license and a second form of identification,

* Speak, read, and write English fluently,

* Pass a criminal background check, meaning no felony convictions,

* Pass a drug test for illegal substances,

* Have a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

For those who want to work in production support, the requirements also include two years of previous component assembly experience in a high-volume manufacturing environment and that must be stated on a résumé or an application form.

Those who want to work as warehouse operators must have at least two years of previous fork lift experience in a warehouse environment reflected on a résumé or application.

Yates Services has provided 25 years of industrial maintenance and warehousing services to Nissan North America.

The limited liability corporation offers progressive pay opportunities, depending upon positions. Hourly wages are from $11.25 to $18.50 per hour.

Screening will take place in the Murfreesboro Career Center as well as on three Career Coaches that will be onsite for the event. The Coaches, which were announced by Governor Bill Haslam last week, are mobile Career Centers with computer workstations that will facilitate the application process.
