Young deer hunter suffers accidental bullet wound
A 12-year-old Marshall County boy suffered an accidental gunshot wound to a leg Saturday afternoon about the time he and his father returned to their pickup truck after hunting deer, the sheriff said that evening.
Sheriff's Detective Tony Nichols was investigating the mishap that was in the Belfast area at about 4:15 p.m. when Samuel Crane, son of Shane Crane, was injured, Sheriff Norman Dalton said. The boy was taken by an Air Evac helicopter ambulance to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
The helicopter ambulance touched down at the landing zone near the Belfast Lions Club, Dalton and another source said that afternoon. The boy was rushed to the landing zone by a Marshall County Emergency Medical Service ambulance crew from a site on the south side of McCullum Road that's south of Finley Beech Road just west of the Bedford County line.
"This is the second accidental shooting within a week," Dalton said, asking the public to be safe. "Be careful especially since it's deer season."
