Having defeated Richland 35-21 earlier in the season, Cornersville held a 19-15 lead early in the fourth quarter of Thursday's contest, but things went awry for CMS after that point, as the Raiders outscored the Bulldogs 13-4 the rest of the way to escape with the five-point victory.
Although Cornersville held a 3-0 edge in three-pointers, Richland finished with a 11-10 advantage in field goals thanks to a five-of-six shooting performance in the fourth quarter.
The Bulldogs also did not attempt a free throw in the contest while the Raiders went to foul line 12 times, hitting six. Richland did commit 17 turnovers, but offset that by out-rebounding CMS 23-15.
Ty Landers hit two treys and led Cornersville with eight points. Ben Proctor and Dayveontae Brown tallied seven and six points respectively for the Bulldogs as well, while Cade Landers chipped in two points and three assists.
Center Nathanael Emerson paced the Raiders with 16 points on seven-of-12 shooting to go along with nine rebounds. Quinton Jordan also added four points for Richland, while Corey Batchelder, Hollis Helton, Michael Allen, and Kody Butcher each had two points.
"When we had the lead in the fourth quarter, we jacked up some shots that we shouldn't have and had a couple of turnovers at key times," said CMS coach Adrian Wilson. "Our defensive rotations were terrible tonight. Their center scored 16 points after scoring two points in the first game."
Cornersville inched out to a 5-2 lead midway through the first quarter thanks to a three and a fade-away jumper from Ty Landers, but Richland notched the next six points to pull ahead 8-5 with 2:20 left in the second period.
Procter buried a trey from the right wing to tie the game at 8-8, before Jordan converted a three-point play to give the Raiders an 11-8 advantage at halftime.
In the second half, the Bulldogs put together an 11-4 run behind a Ty Landers three and four points apiece from Brown and Proctor to grab a 19-15 lead early in the fourth quarter.
After Richland tallied five straight points to seize a 20-19 advantage, Brown hit a running bank shot to put CMS up 21-20, but Batchelder made a steal near midcourt and scored on a layup to stake the Raiders to a 22-21 lead with 1:20 left.
Following a layup by Emerson, which stretched Richland's lead to 24-21, the Bulldogs trimmed the deficit to 24-23 with :29 remaining on a Cade Landers offensive put-back.
The Raiders then sealed their 28-23 victory by scoring the last four points of the game on a layup from Emerson and two Allen free throws while Cornersville missed three-pointers on their final two possessions.
