Applicants sought for Celebration CEO job

Wednesday, February 15, 2012

From staff reports

The Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration search committee is looking for a new chief executive officer.

The open position is because the current CEO, Dr. Doyle Meadows, announced his intention to resign two months ago. Meadows told the Celebration's board of directors last December that his tenure as CEO will come to an end in October, 2012, following this year's Celebration.

Applications for the CEO position will be accepted by the board of directors through March 21.

Meadows' tenure

Meadows was hired as the Celebration CEO in February 2008 and, according to a news release issued in December by horse show officials, his tenure included a difficult time in the Celebration's history, including an economic downturn, regulatory issues and the replacement of the National Horse Show Commission with the S.H.O.W. HIO as the Horse Industry Organization governing Tennessee Walking Horse competition.

"As most of you were aware when I became CEO of the Celebration, being the 'old-timer' that I am, my years of service would be limited," Meadows said in his December letter to the board, informing the group of his intent to resign.

Final show

"Therefore, in an effort for the Board of Directors to adequately plan an exit strategy, I will leave as CEO of The Celebration at the end of the working day, October 31, 2012.

"As you can tell by the date of this I will be here through the 2012 Celebration. I look forward to an outstanding year and Celebration. I am most grateful of the lasting friendships that will not end when I leave the Celebration."

Changing times

Meadows' intent to resign is not the only change the industry has experienced in recent times. Last week, the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders' and Exhibitors' Association announced its plans to hold its showcase of young horses, an event that normally kicks off the Celebration, in Murfreesboro.

The job description for the CEO position states this person's primary functions will be "to advise and assist the Board in the development of and to implement the strategic goals and objectives of the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration ... (and) To give direction and leadership toward the achievement of the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration's philosophy, mission, strategy and its annual goals and objectives.
