Abernathy starts work as schools director

Marshall County's new director of schools started work last week, after school board members voted Thursday night to have her contract take effect Friday.

New director Jackie Abernathy had negotiated her contract with board attorney Sam Jackson. After some discussion of its terms at the board's March meeting last week, board member Sam Smith asked when the contract would start and finish.

"She's to start on June 30, 2012," Jackson answered.

"She needs to be a part of the budget process," Randy Perryman pointed out. "In fairness, we need to give her that opportunity."

Curt Denton moved to execute the contract with an effective date of March 9, and an ending date of June 30, 2014.

He proposed to keep Roy Dukes on as a "consultant" at his current pay and benefits.

"I'm not sure Mr. Dukes would want to be a consultant," Ann Tears interjected. "It would be an additional cost on the system," she continued. "I don't understand the intent. We shouldn't spend that ..... For the rest of the story look in your local Marshall County Tribune newspaper
