Homer Cheslie Hayes, 86, of Chapel Hill, died Thursday, May 10, 2012, in Lewisburg..
Mr. Hayes served with great distinction aboard the USS Kidd off Okinawa in World War II. The Kidd was hit by a kamikaze and many of his shipmates were killed. He served heroically as the crew fought to save the badly damaged Kidd. Mr. Hayes was a retired employee of TVA and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Mr. Hayes was a deacon and a member of Caney Spring Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Ruth Langford Hayes; his father, James Bon Hayes; his mother, Bessie Miller; and his sister, Maxine Gordon.
He is survived by a son, James (Naomi) Hayes of College Grove; a daughter, Judy (Steven) Heath of Spring Hill; a grandson, James (Lora) Hayes Jr. of Brentwood; a great-granddaughter, Autumn, and a great-grandson, Hunter, both of Brentwood; and a sister Peggy (Mac) Gore of Puryear.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, May 12, at Judson Baptist Church, Nashville, with Dr. Gene Mims officiating. Graveside services followed at Swanson Cemetery in Chapel Hill.
