The Tennessee Department of Transportation has temporarily stopped work on the bridge on London Road over Richland Creek in Marshall County due to the presence of nesting barn swallows, also known as cliff swallows.

"These birds have built a nest under the beams of the old bridge and there is a special environmental provision in the contract that states if these birds are present during their nesting season time of April 15th though July 31st, TDOT must not disturb their habitat," TDOT spokeswoman Deanna Lambert reported Wednesday.

"Crews have already finished building the new bridge and were going to tear the old bridge down," Lambert said. "We will now have to wait until July 31st. The contractor will be reopening the road until crews are ready to tear the old bridge down."
