Lady Bulldogs whip Huntland
Amala Elder helped Cornersville pick up their first victory of the season on the pitch, as the junior striker scored a career high four goals to lead the Lady Bulldogs to a 4-0 home win over the Huntland Lady Hornets on Thursday night.
Huntland had defeated the Lady Bulldogs 6-1 in their lone encounter last year, but Cornersville (1-4-1, 1-3 District) turned the tables on the Lady Hornets in Thursday's contest and built a 3-0 lead in the first half before tacking on another goal midway through the second stanza to cruise to the easy victory.
"It feels good because the girls needed this win," said CHS coach Lindsey Browning. "Last year Huntland beat us 6-1 and we wanted to beat them real bad. I think we surprised them by jumping out to a big lead in the first half."
With her performance on Thursday, Elder has now accounted for six of the seven goals that the Lady Bulldogs have scored this year.
"Amala was awesome today. She was fired up and has finally found her niche on our team. I'm glad we will have her back next year," said Browning.
Aided by their strong first half effort, Cornersville outshot Huntland 18-11 overall. Elder attempted a team high eight shots and senior striker Makayla Campbell took six shots. Anna Claire Foster also fired two shots on goal for the Lady Bulldogs to go along with an assist, while Jessica Dunn and Gloria Palma each tallied one shot.
Cornersville goaltender Ivory Riner notched six saves en route to recording the shutout. Lady Hornet goalie Jesse Garrett, meanwhile, finished with nine saves.
The Lady Bulldogs grabbed a 1-0 lead just five minutes into the game when Elder took the ball down the right side of the field and lined a shot into the upper left hand corner of the net from the top of the goalie box.
Elder then struck again in the 8th minute to give CHS a 2-0 advantage. After Campbell was tripped up in the middle of the field while making a run towards the Huntland net, Elder ran down the loose ball and rifled a shot past Garrett from 18 yards out.
In the 26th minute, Elder completed the first half hat trick when she stole the ball from a Lady Hornet player in the middle of the field and blasted a 15-yard shot just underneath the top post of the net to stretch Cornersville's lead to 3-0.
Riner thwarted a couple of Lady Hornet scoring chances early in the second half before Elder tallied her fourth goal of the day in the 62nd minute by redirecting a crossing pass from Foster into the back of the net to cap the Lady Bulldogs' 4-0 triumph.
