Register of Deeds warns of scam

Area property owners should be on the lookout for a mail solicitation that encourages them to obtain a copy of their deed in exchange for a rather large processing fee.

"This has been happening all across the state," said Marshall County Register of Deeds Dorris Wayne Weaver. "We charge 15 cents per page for uncertified copies and $1 per page for certified copies," he continues.

The solicitation comes from a Nashville address and asks for a service fee of $89 in exchange for providing a deed, which can be obtained right here in the county for much less.

"It seems like they are preying more on the elderly," Weaver said.

The solicitation specifically states it is not a bill, and says you are not obligated to pay anything.

"Just remember, if you need a copy of a deed, come to the Register of Deeds office" in the Courthouse Annex, said Weaver.
