Jane was born in Cornersville on July 13, 1923, to the late Shelby Marsh and Margaret Burgess Haywood. She attended Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville and was recruited to work in Oak Ridge during WWII. It was there that she met her husband of 65 years, Robert. She was a charter member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. Jane was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and a friend to many.She was a true people person who loved life and had an outgoing personality. She was a former member of the Friendship Force, Oak Ridge 43 Club, Silver Tops, and Buckingham Community Association.
In addition to her parents, Jane was preceded in death by her sister, Betty Gilbert; brothers, Egbert Haywood and Shelby Haywood; and her son-in-law, Ronnie Bright.
Jane is survived by her husband, Robert Lee Higgins; son, Alan Westra Higgins (Sara Morrison) of Raleigh, N.C.; daughter, Mae Higgins-Bright of Knoxville; granddaughter, Hailey Bright of Los Angeles, Calif.; grandson, Devin Bright of Knoxville; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, June Young.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church of Oak Ridge with The Rev. Craig Kallio officiating. It will be followed by the interment in the church memory garden. A reception will follow in the church parish hall.
