Lady Bulldogs rout Culleoka
The Cornersville Lady Bulldogs (2-5-1) recorded their most lopsided victory on the pitch in seven years on Friday afternoon when they crushed the Culleoka Lady Warriors 10-0 at home.
Cornersville buried the Lady Warriors (0-7) early and forged a 5-0 lead in the first half before scoring five more goals over the final 40 minutes to coast to their second win of the season.
Friday's triumph marked the largest margin of victory for the Lady Bulldogs since they defeated Middle Tennessee Christian School 14-0 on Oct. 4, 2005.
Cornersville kept heavy pressure on the Lady Warriors' net for much of the contest and outshot Culleoka 23-6 overall.
"I was surprised with how well we played offensively and was proud of the girls because they were on the other end of these types of games a couple of years ago," said Lady Bulldog coach Lindsey Browning. "It was also a good opportunity to get our younger girls some playing time and allowed them to play different positions."
Strikers Makayla Campbell and Amala Elder each scored three goals to lead the Lady Bulldogs' offensive assault with Campbell dishing out one assist.
"They were both outstanding today. Amala has been on a tear recently and it was good for Makayla to score some goals to help her confidence," said Browning.
Sadie Gentry also added two goals for Cornersville, while Jessica Dunn and starting goaltender Ivory Riner tallied one goal apiece. Riner finished with four saves in net as well en route to recording her second shutout of the season.
Lady Warrior starting goaltender Whitney Duke notched seven saves before Ashlind James replaced Duke in net at the start of the second half and registered four saves.
The Lady Bulldogs pounced on Culleoka immediately, as Elder stole a pass in the middle of the field and lined a close range shot into the left hand corner of the net to make it 1-0 in the first minute of play.
Campbell then stretched Cornersville's lead to 2-0 in the fourth minute by lofting a 10-yard shot into the upper right hand corner of the goal after winning a scramble for the ball in the middle of the field.
In the 17th minute, the Lady Bulldogs pushed their lead to 3-0 when Gentry intercepted a goal kick on the right side of the field and rifled a shot into the left side of the net from the top of the goalie box.
After Culleoka was called for a foul in the goalie box, Elder blasted a penalty kick past Duke in the 19th minute to give Cornersville a 4-0 advantage.
Elder completed her first half hat trick in the 33rd minute by running down a loose ball in the middle of the field and lining a close range shot just inside the left post to extend the Lady Bulldogs' lead to 5-0.
Cornersville widened their lead to 6-0 early in the second half when Campbell stole the ball on the right side of the field and kicked a low, skidding shot into the left side of the net from 12 yards out in the 44th minute.
Campbell notched her third goal of the game in the 49th minute by firing a close range shot through James' hands to stake the Lady Bulldogs to a 7-0 advantage.
Cornersville increased their lead to 8-0 in the 51st minute when Campbell settled a corner kick by Anna Claire Foster in front of the net and dished the ball to Dunn, who chipped in a shot from point blank range.
In the 58th minute, Gentry blasted a direct kick into the left hand corner of the goal from 20 yards out to make it 9-0.
Riner then capped the Lady Bulldogs' 10-0 victory by lining a shot that bounced off a Lady Warrior defender and into the back of the net in the 71st minute.
