Gymnasts compete for championships

The Discovery Gymnastics Compulsory teams competed at the Music City Invitational in November. This is a huge competition with over 700 gymnasts from more than 30 different gyms throughout six states. The Level 3, 4, and 5 teams from Discovery all participated at the meet held in Cool Springs. The Level 3 team was awarded second place in their session, the Level 4 team received ninth place, and the Level 5 team received eighth place in their sessions.

Several gymnasts received top three finishes. From Level 3, Ainsley Howard was awarded 1st place on Floor, 2nd place on Beam and All-Around and 3rd place on Bars. Mackenzie Whitmire placed 1st on Beam and 3rd on Bars, Vault, Floor and All-Around. Victoria Kirscht placed 2nd on Bars and Floor, and Mary Elise Lynch was awarded 2nd place on Vault and 3rd place on Bars, Floor, and All-Around. Kiley Nutt finished in 1st place on Vault, Floor and All-Around, and second on Bars and Beam. From Level 4, Carmen McMillan was awarded 2nd place on Vault and received 3rd place on Bars.

The Discovery Compulsory gymnasts finished their 2012 season at the TN State Championships held at Austin Peay State University in December. The state championships end the compulsory season and includes over 500 of the best gymnasts from all over the state of Tennessee. All of the Level 3, 4 and 5 gymnasts from Discovery qualified to compete at the state competition this year and had a great competition. Level 3 gymnast, Mackenzie Whitmire was named State Vault Champion in her division, and Level 5 gymnast, Kortney Cognevich, was named State Champion on Beam, Floor Exercise, and All-Around in her division.

Level 3 gymnasts that competed at the state championships were, Brooklyn Hanson, Cadi Webster, Mackenzie Whitmire, Ainsley Howard, Victoria Kirscht, Emma Barberi, Kiley Nutt, and Mary Elise Lynch. The Level 3 team placed 5th at the state competition. Top 5 finishes from the Level 3 gymnasts are as follows. Mackenzie Whitmire received 1st on Vault with a 9.750, 3rd on Beam with a 9.525, 4th on Bars with a 9.425 and placed 4th in the All-Around. Ainsley Howard placed 5th on Vault with a 9.625. Emma Barberi placed 3rd on Vault with a 9.850, 4th on Bars with a 9.475 and 5th in the All-Around. Kiley Nutt was awarded 5th place on Bars with a 9.525 and Mary Elise Lynch received 4th place on Vault with a 9.725.

The Level 4 team from Discovery had a great showing at the state meet also. The Level 4 team includes Bayleigh Tosh, Grace Adams, and Carmen McMillan. Top 5 finishes from this level include 4th place on Beam by Bayleigh Tosh with a 9.375, 5th place on Bars, by Grace Adams with a 9.275, and 4th place on Vault by Carmen McMillan with a 9.350.

Discovery's Level 5 gymnasts also had some impressive results at the state meet. The Level 5 team is made up of Kortney Cognevich, Anna Burcham, and Jillian White. Top 5 finishes from this level are as follows. Kortney Cognevich received 1st place on Beam (9.275), Floor Exercise (9.250), and All-Around and she got 3rd place on Vault with an 8.9 and 4th place on Bars with an 8.675. Anna Burcham placed 4th on Beam with an 8.975 and Jillian White took 4th place on Floor with a 9.525.

Congratulations to all of the Discovery gymnasts and their coaches for a job well done. These girls continue to work hard on new skills to prepare for next year's competitive season.
