CMS Lady Bulldogs rally past Bridgeforth
Although they had a tougher time than expected, the Cornersville Middle School Lady Bulldogs (6-4) found a way to record their third straight win on Tuesday night when they defeated the Bridgeforth Lady Bobcats 12-8 in Pulaski.
Cornersville had defeated Bridgeforth 16-2 in their previous meeting on March 12, but found themselves in a big hole early on in Tuesday's contest, as the Lady Bobcats jumped out to an 8-3 lead through the first three innings of play before taking an 8-6 advantage into the top of the seventh.
The Lady Bulldogs, however, thwarted Bridgeforth's upset bid by tallying six runs in the top of the seventh inning to seize a 12-8 lead before holding the Lady Bobcats scoreless in the bottom half of the frame.
Aided by their late offensive surge, Cornersville finished with 10 hits and six walks against Bridgeforth starting pitcher Bianca Malone to go along with two Lady Bobcat errors.
Hannah Singleton (2 RBI), Courtney Darnell (1 RBI), and Samantha Prosser each notched two hits to lead CMS at the plate, while Jewel Anne Walls (2 RBI), relief pitcher Mikaela King (1 RBI), Madison Hopkins, and Emma Mitchell all had one hit.
King also picked up the win in the circle and allowed six runs, only one earned, in seven innings of work on four hits and seven walks to go along with six strikeouts after coming on in relief of starting hurler Kirsten Young in the top of the first. The Lady Bulldogs made King's task tougher by committing five errors, which contributed to five of Bridgeforth's eight runs.
Cornersville's pitching staff had trouble with their control early on, as the Lady Bobcats tallied two runs in the bottom of the first inning on four walks and a RBI fielder's choice by Bianca Malone to grab a 2-0 lead.
The Lady Bulldogs trimmed the deficit to 2-1 in the top of the second when Prosser raced home on a RBI groundout by Aliyah Holder after leading off the frame with a single and stealing second and third.
Bridgeforth then stretched their lead to 4-1 by pushing across two runs in the bottom of the second thanks to two walks, two CMS errors, an Ombreyah Daly infield single, and a wild pitch.
Cornersville scored two runs in the top of the third on a leadoff single by King, a Mitchell walk, a Singleton RBI infield single, and a wild pitch, but the Lady Bobcats notched four runs in the bottom half of the frame with the help of a walk, three CMS errors, a RBI double by Rachel Norwood, and a Daly RBI single to open up an 8-3 advantage.
In the top of the fourth, the Lady Bulldogs took advantage of some shaky defense by Bridgeforth, as they plated three runs in the frame behind a leadoff single by Darnell, two Lady Bobcat errors, a RBI fielder's choice by King, a wild pitch, and a Walls RBI groundout to slice the deficit to 8-6.
Malone held Cornersville scoreless over the next two innings, but CMS finally overtook the Lady Bobcats in the top of the seventh by crossing home plate six times in the frame on the strength of a Darnell RBI single, two double steals, a RBI groundout by King, a Walls RBI triple, and a RBI single by Singleton to seize a 12-8 lead.
King then worked around a walk and a hit batsman in the bottom of the seventh with the aid of a 1-3-2 double play to secure the Lady Bulldogs' sixth win of the season.
