Every year the Lewisburg Rotary Club recognizes a Volunteer of the Year. After this year's voting it was decided the 2013 Rotary Volunteer of the Year award would go to David Sanders.

Sanders was born in Lewisburg and graduated from Marshall County High School in 1969. He was the president of his fraternity, Alpha Tau Omega, his senior year. He graduated from the University of Tennessee Knoxville in 1973. Straight out of college, Sanders began teaching and has taught for 40 years. Three of those years were in Knoxville, the remaining 37 years were spent here in Marshall County.

He taught specifically at Marshall County High School for 36 years, teaching English and theater arts. Every student who has ever had Sanders as a teacher is bound to be full of stories. In fact it seemed to have been a tradition at MCHS that every senior took "Drama with Dave." He has also helped with the audio set up for chorus and done the occasional announcements during homecoming.

Sanders has played an active role with the Marshall County Community Theater for many years, and continues to be involved with them today. His most recent production at the community theater was performed this summer, "Flowers for Algernon."

Since 2009 Sanders has been volunteering to help a struggling young man find a home; helped him to get through high school, and has been pushing him toward higher education. He has made quite an impact on the young man, and he on him.

Upon receiving the award, Sanders gave a small speech, explaining that he learned volunteering from his wonderful parents -- Phil Sanders and the late Jerre Sanders -- who seemed to always be volunteering for everything. He reflected on the many blessings he has received because of volunteering.

Sanders thanked everyone for his award, and ended with a favorite quote from John Lennon and Paul McCartney, "Nothing you can know that isn't known. Nothing you can see that isn't shown. Nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be. It's easy. All you need is love."
