Rockets split home match
The Forrest Rocket grapplers, coming off an unwanted break because of last week's school closing, combined with the long Christmas holiday looked a little rusty Thursday night as they lost 47-34 to White House before posting an 84-0 shutout over the Tennessee School for the blind.
"I did not think we were ready mentally to wrestle White House," said Forrest coach Kyle Stacey. "I felt like the break over Christmas plus the snow days really hurt because it's hard to stay competitive if you don't stay on a routine."
Joesph Williams came up with a pin over White House's Clayton Gilbert to start the match before the Blue Devils went on a devastating run, putting up 29 straight points to take a commanding lead.
Tyler McClendon stopped the bleeding for the Rockets with a pin over James Whitby before Corey and Kyle Cantrell pinned the next two Forrest wrestlers to make it a 41-12 match.
The Rockets hung tough as CJ Monce (106 lbs.) won by a technical fall, Dylan Pendley (113 lbs.) won by forfeit, Cage Hargrove (120 lbs.) followed with a pin over Danny Jeffery, and Nick Tahmassebi (126 lbs.) won by a technical fall over Robert Huffines.
The Blue Devils secured the win as Devin Huffines pinned Cooper McNair in the 132-pound weight class to end the match.
"We have not wrestled White House in a dual setting, but some of our guys have wrestled them in an individual tournament," said Stacey. "They have a really great wrestling team and they wrestle aggressively."
In the nightcap, the Rockets took on the Tennessee School for the Blind squad with a rule that stipulates that physical contact must be maintained between the combatants at all times, and if the contact is broken at any time during the match, the referees whistle will stop play.
"We talked about the rules for wrestling someone visually impaired in practice and the referee went over the rules before the match," said Stacey.
Forrest won by shutout over the Tigers, who battled in every weight class they participated in.
"That kind of put things in perspective for all of us," said Stacey "Watching those wrestlers overcome such adversity really made us humble."
The Rockets improved to 16-4 on the season and have only three matches remaining before the Region Duals commence on Jan. 23 at Eagleville.
"We have to take the loss against White House and use it to help us motivate ourselves going into tournament time," said Stacey. "A loss like that can help us if we learn from it."
