Carolyn Ledford Fortson

Carolyn Ledford Fortson, 80, of Athens, Ga., passed away on Monday, Jan. 20, 2014, surrounded by her children and grandchildren.

Carolyn was born in Mooresville on March 25, 1933. She was one of seven children of Ruth King Ledford and Brian Ledford. She graduated from Middle Tennessee State in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science degree. While teaching in Columbus, Ga., she met her husband, James Camp Fortson, who is now deceased. After marriage and a brief teaching career, she had three children. She and Jim raised a family in Athens, Ga. Carolyn was an avid gardener and a past president of the Georgia Garden Club. She was a charter member of Milledge Avenue Baptist Church and a loyal supporter of the University of Georgia Athletics.

She is survived by three children, Lynne Milner of Manassas, Va., Phil Fortson of Crozet, Va. and Brian Fortson of Athens, Ga.; four grandchildren, Mary Milner, Carolyn Fortson, Lane Milner, and Camp Fortson; three sisters and a sister-in-law, Betty Roberts and Amy Ledford, both of Athens, Ala., Alice Foughner of Marietta, Ga., and Imogene Ledford of Lewisburg.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Milledge Avenue Baptist Church, 1690 South Milledge Ave., Athens, GA 30605.

Funeral services were held at Milledge Avenue Baptist Church on Saturday, Jan. 25. A graveside ceremony followed at Getzen Memorial Church Cemetery in Fortson, Ga., where Carolyn was buried next to her husband.

Lord and Stephens East Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
