Central Magnet tops Tigerettes

Murfreesboro Central Magnet (MCM) completed the sweep of the season series against the Marshall County Tigerettes (5-16) by defeating MCHS 61-39 in Lewisburg on Monday night.

After building a 28-16 lead through the first two quarters of play , MCM began to rapidly pull away in the second half and opened up a 56-25 advantage midway through the fourth period en route to claiming the 22-point victory.

Although Murfreesboro Central Magnet (15-5) committed 21 turnovers, they shot 48 percent (21-of-44) from the field and knocked down 5-of-15 three-point attempts, while outscoring the Tigerettes 14-9 at the foul line. MCM also outrebounded Marshall County 31-24 and held a 9-8 edge on the offensive glass.

Unstoppable Smith

MCHS simply had no answer for Murfreesboro Central Magnet's Claudia Smith, as the junior guard poured in a game high 33 points on 12-of-25 shooting, highlighted by five treys. Center Ola Obi also tallied 13 points for MCM, while Catherine Faulk chipped in four points.

The Tigerettes struggled to break Murfreesboro Central Magnet's full court press and committed 22 turnovers, while mustering only 13 field goals on 42 percent shooting, which included a 4-of-14 effort from beyond the arc.

Senior guard Allison Hargrove hit 5-of-10 shots and led Marshall County with 16 points. Mecia Reed followed Hargrove with six points, while Zachuriya O'Neal and Kiya Morris notched four points apiece. Britni Davis added three points as well, and Alexis Ford and Christy Pettigrew both chipped in two points with Ford grabbing a game high nine rebounds. Taianda Hutton and Dymond Wicks rounded out the scoring for the Tigerettes with one point each.

Murfreesboro Central Magnet raced out to an early 7-0 lead before Hargrove sandwiched a three-point play and a trey around a layup by Obi to narrow the gap to 9-6 with 2:56 left in the first quarter.

After Smith drained a three to give MCM a 12-6 advantage, the Tigerettes closed the first period with a 6-3 spurt behind two treys from Reed to cut the deficit to 15-12.

Magnet takes off

Murfreesboro Central Magnet then began to assert control of the contest in the second quarter and outscored Marshall County 13-4 in the stanza to take a 28-16 lead into halftime.

Morris hit a short bank shot at the start of the third quarter to close the gap to 28-18 before MCM tallied six of the next seven points to open up a 34-19 advantage.

Hargrove scored two straight layups to whittle the deficit to 34-23 midway through the third period, but Murfreesboro Central Magnet blew the game open by putting together a 22-2 run to forge a 56-25 lead with 4:40 left in the fourth quarter.

The Tigerettes then outscored MCM 14-5 the rest of the way with the help of four points from O'Neal and a Davis three for the 61-39 final.
