The Forrest Rocket wrestling team bounced back as high as you can go after their disappointing loss in the region dual tournament when they captured their first team title at the Region 3 A/AA Individual Tournament at Creekwood.

"Our kids made an incredible comeback from the loss in the regional dual tournament and I think that loss helped get our wrestlers even more focused on the region tournament," said Forrest head coach Kyle Stacey. "We came back the week after the regional duals and had one of the best weeks of practice since the beginning of the season."

Winning pace

The five Forrest wrestlers who earned state tournament berths are, from left, front row, CJ Monce, Cage Hargrove, and Dylan Pendley; back row, Tyler McClendon and Bryan Clanton.

Forrest will send a record five grapplers to the TSSAA State Tournament with seniors Tyler McClendon, Cage Hargrove, and Bryan Clanton leading the way.

Freshman CJ Monce and eighth-grader Dylan Pendley also punched their tickets to the event that will begin on Friday at 10 a.m. at the Williamson County Agricultural Expo Center in Franklin.

The Rockets finished the meet with 142.5 points, White House came in as the runners-up with 107 points and Eagleville was third at 105, while East Nashville ended up fourth with 102 points and Sycamore rounded out the top five with 99 points.

"Unfortunately, not all of our wrestlers get the honor of wrestling in the state, but all of them contributed to the team winning the overall Region 3 A/AA Tournament," said Stacey.

Tyler McClendon earned Wrestler of the Year and went 3-0 with two pins and a close 10-9 decision over East Literature's Javon Cross at the Region 3 A/AA Tournament.

McClendon went undefeated at the tournament and the coaches rewarded McClendon for his stellar season when he was named the Region 3 A/AA Wrestler of the Year in the upper weight classes (160-285).

McClendon sports a 35-1 overall record, which earned him a number one seed and a first round bye in Friday's opening round of the state tournament.

"Tyler has been a leader on the football field and on the wrestling mat all year long as well," said Stacey.

Cage Hargrove will be making his third consecutive trip to the state tournament for the Rockets, who won the team portion of the Region 3 A/AA event.

Third straight year

Hargrove, also a one-seed, will be making his third consecutive trip to the state tournament after putting up a 4-0 record at Creekwood in the 120-pound weight class.

"Cage has been a leader on this team all year long," said Stacey. "He has dedicated himself to the sport of wrestling."

Late bloomer

Bryan Clanton will be making his first trip to the TSSAA State Tournament after qualifying via a 4-2 record at Creekwood.

Clanton (12-6) came on late in the year for the Rockets and has been on fire ever since, going 4-2 at Creekwood in the 170-pound weight class, good enough for a berth at state and a No. 4 seed.

"This is Bryan's first trip to the state tournament and I believe he was the most excited wrestler of the five when he won his qualifying match," said Stacey.

Monce (27-7) will be a two-seed in the 106-pound division and posted a 1-1 record at the region tournament.

"CJ wrestled as an eighth-grader last year, won several big matches for us this year and continues to improve each day," said Stacey.

Eighth grader

Pendley, a first year wrestler is the second eighth grader (Taylor Abrigo, 2005-2006) in Forrest School history to earn a trip to the TSSAA State Tournament.

In preparation for the state tournament, Stacey will try to go to some of the surrounding schools and practice with their state qualifiers.

"Our plan for Wednesday is to go to the Expo Center and wrestle with other teams that will be there," said Stacey. "We will also have the opportunity to check our weight on their scales in order to make sure we are not overweight."

Hard work

The Rockets have had an incredible season on the mats and Stacey said, "I would like to thank all of our wrestlers this year for the hard work and dedication they showed to the team. The end of wrestling season is such a bittersweet experience because some wrestlers advance and some do not. All the wrestlers we had this year played an important role in improving our wrestling program and I would like to give much credit to Coach Josh Roberson. Coach Rob loves the sport and is very dedicated to our kids at Forrest."
