Introducing the 2014 March of Dimes Ambassador

Special to the Tribune
I am the mother of Skylar James Daws.
Skylar was born on Sept. 30, 2011. He weighed 2 pounds 12 ounces and was 15 inches long.
My water broke when I was 26 weeks pregnant with Skylar, so I was sent to Vanderbilt and Skylar came into the world at 28 weeks. He was very little, but he was a strong boy. Skylar was a fighter from his first breath, earning him the nickname "Champ." The only obstacle he had to overcome while in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit was learning to eat without his feeding tube.
When you walk in March for Babies, you give hope to the more than half a million babies born too soon each year. The money you raise supports programs in your community that help moms have healthy, full-term pregnancies. And it funds research to find answers to the problems that threaten our babies. I have the March of Dimes and their years of funding research to thank for the survival of my little Champ.
