The Cornersville Middle School Lady Bulldogs (9-3) dealt Forrest Middle School their first loss of the season on Friday afternoon when they defeated the Lady Rockets 9-5 at home.

Having lost to FMS 9-8 in their season opener on Feb. 25, the Lady Bulldogs were locked in a 2-2 tie with Forrest (11-1-1) through the first three and a half innings of play before exploding for five runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-2 lead.

After opening up an 9-3 lead at the end of the sixth inning, Cornersville had to withstand a Lady Rocket rally in the top of the seventh to claim the four-run victory.

'Sweet win'

"This was a sweet win. We played them close the last time so we had the confidence that we could beat them today," said CMS coach Sherry Campbell. "I'm pleased that we stayed calm and got the job done because the last time we kind of lost our heads."

The Lady Bulldogs banged out 14 hits against two Forrest pitchers to along with three walks. Emma Mitchell wielded the hottest bat for Cornersville and went 4-for-4 with 3 RBI and a run scored. Ali Blair Jones also tallied three hits and 2 RBI, while starting pitcher Mikaela King (1 RBI), Hannah Singleton, and Daisy Braden added two hits apiece. Christina Henline notched a hit for CMS as well.

Forrest starting pitcher Kayla Gillespie suffered the loss after yielding seven runs, three earned, over four innings on 12 hits and a walk.

Eighth win

Despite having to overcome six CMS errors, King went the distance in the circle to earn her eighth win of the year, as she allowed five runs, only one earned, on eight hits.

Forrest third baseman Grace Thrasher throws out Cornersville's Ali Blair Jones at first base after fielding a bunt in the bottom of the third inning.

Rickee Gayle Carter accounted for half of the Lady Rockets' hits by going 4-for-4 with a double and a RBI. Carson Warner also tallied two hits, while Grace Thrasher and Brooke Paul both had one hit.

The Lady Bulldogs grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Singleton scored on a RBI single by Mitchell after roping a leadoff double down the left field line and advancing to third on a Jones single.

Forrest mounted an immediate response and scratched out a run in the top of the second with the help of a Warner single, an infield single by Carter, and a CMS error to knot the game at 1-1.

Keeping it close

Cornersville tallied a run in the bottom of the third thanks to a RBI infield single by Mitchell to seize a 2-1 advantage, but the Lady Rockets plated a run in the top of the fourth on a Carter RBI single to retie the game at 2-2.

The Lady Bulldogs then broke the game open by pushing across five runs in the bottom of the fourth on the strength of a Holder walk, an error, a bunt single by Henline, a Jones RBI single, a RBI groundout by Taylor Powers, a King RBI infield single, a RBI bloop single by Mitchell, and a Braden bloop single to forge a 7-2 lead.

After Forrest notched a run in the top of the fifth on an error and a RBI single by Thrasher to trim the deficit to 7-3, CMS opened up an 8-3 advantage in the bottom half of the frame thanks to two-out a RBI triple by Jones.

The Lady Bulldogs then stretched their lead to 9-4 in the bottom of the sixth when Mitchell raced home on a wild pitch after singling and stealing second and third.

In the top of the seventh, the Lady Rockets scored two runs with the aid of three Cornersville errors to narrow the gap to 9-5 before Paul and Carter both singled to load the bases with two outs.

King, though, settled down and retired the next Forrest batter on a groundout to secure the win for the Lady Bulldogs.
