Ravenwood ends Lady Bulldog run
After defeating a strong Gordonsville team a couple hours earlier, the Cornersville Lady Bulldogs (14-10) saw their run through the Bronze Division of the Franklin/Sonic Tournament come to an end on Saturday afternoon when they lost 3-0 in five innings to the Ravenwood Raptors in the semifinals at Fly Park.
Despite their loss to Ravenwood, Cornersville coach Eric Crabtree was pleased with his team's performance during the tournament.
"Our goal was to iron out some kinks and get ready for the District and I think we did that. We finished with a 4-2 record here and played better as the day wore on," said Crabtree.
Lady Raptor starting pitcher Abby Irwin put the clamps on CHS' offense and limited the Lady Bulldogs to just four hits overall to go along with no walks and four strikeouts.
Hannah Singleton tallied two hits to lead Cornersville at the plate, while starting pitcher Taylor Wolaver and Kelsey Wortham each had one hit.
Wolaver also turned in a solid performance in the circle, but suffered the loss after yielding three runs in five innings of work on seven hits and two walks.
Julia Gentile paced Ravenwood's offense by going 2-for-2 with a RBI. Lauren DuPont (1 RBI), Lauren Myers, Haley Barnette, Autumn Ogletree, and Demi Patonis notched one hit apiece for the Lady Raptors as well.
Cornersville had a chance to grab the momentum early when they put runners on first and third with one out in the bottom of the first inning thanks to singles by Wortham and Wolaver, but Irwin retired the next two CHS batters on a foul out and a strikeout to keep the Lady Bulldogs off the board.
CHS then stranded another runner in scoring position in the bottom of the second before the Lady Raptors took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Myers trotted home on a RBI double by DuPont after leading off the inning with a double and advancing to third on a wild pitch.
In the top of the fourth, Ravenwood plated a run with the help of a leadoff triple by Patonis and a Gentile RBI infield single to open up a 2-0 advantage.
Irwin then worked around a two-out single by Singleton in the bottom of the fourth before the Lady Raptors tacked on an insurance run in the top of the fifth thanks to a leadoff walk by DuPont, a Barnette single, and a RBI groundout by Drew Dudley to cap their 3-0 win.
