The Cornersville Lady Bulldogs (14-9) notched an impressive win on Saturday afternoon at the Franklin/Sonic Tournament when they defeated the Gordonsville Tigerettes 2-1 in five innings at Fly Park in the quarterfinals of the Bronze Division.

Having finished second in last year's Class A State Tournament, Gordonsville boasted a 22-8 record coming into their contest against Cornersville, but the Lady Bulldogs didn't appear to be intimidated by the Tigerettes' resume and jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning.

Scoreless late

After Gordonsville narrowed the gap 2-1 in the top of the third, Cornersville starting pitcher Mary Taylor Hickman held the Tigerettes scoreless over the next two frames before the game was called due to time constraints.

"Our team knew nothing about them so we didn't fear them. Hopefully this win will give us some confidence going into the playoffs," said Cornersville coach Eric Crabtree.

Despite being hobbled by a leg injury after being struck by a line drive in the third inning, Hickman was able to keep Gordonsville's offense under wraps, as she allowed just one run in five innings of work on four hits while issuing no walks and recording six strikeouts en route to earning her seventh win of the year.

Four hits

The Lady Bulldogs also finished with four hits against Tigerette starting hurler Shelby West, who suffered the loss. Hickman, Hannah Singleton, Samantha Prosser, and Madison Hopkins each tallied one hit for Cornersville with Hickman driving in both CHS runs.

Cori Jennings (1 RBI), Taylor Tsai, Robin Anne Hord, and Allyson West notched one hit apiece for Gordonsville.

The Tigerettes had a chance to take the lead in the top of the first inning after putting runners on first and second with two outs thanks to a Jennings single and an error, but Hickman struck out Hord to escape the inning unscathed.

Gordonsville then stranded a runner at third in the top of the second inning before the Lady Bulldogs pushed across two runs in the bottom half of the frame to grab a 2-0 lead. West retired the first two batters of the inning, but Singleton lined a single into left centerfield before Prosser hammered a double off the left field fence to put runners on second and third. Hickman then plated both runners by serving a two-run bloop single into right field.

One score

In the top of the third, the Tigerettes finally cashed in on a scoring opportunity and plated one run in the frame to slice the deficit to 2-1. After singling and advancing to second on a CHS error, Tsai moved to third on a fly out by West prior to coming home on a Jennings RBI groundout.

Cornersville left a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the third, but Hickman made the Lady Bulldogs' slim lead stand up, as she worked around a leadoff single by Hord in the fourth inning before sitting down Gordonsville in order in the top of the fifth.
