Barbecue contest and carnival a big success for Rotary
By Karen Hall
Attendance was up at the carnival, and more teams entered the barbecue contest than ever before, making the Rotary's annual festival in Rock Creek Park the biggest and best ever.
"It's the biggest number of barbecue teams we've had," said barbecue chairman Jeff Jordan. There were 53 teams competing for a variety of prizes.
The Grand Champion and professional winner was Tenacious Q of Lawrenceville, Ga., while the back yard winner was Pit Row Barbecue of Tuscumbia, Ala. The dessert category was won by Rooters-N-Tooters of Columbia.
"The carnival was great," said Jordan. "It was the best attended we've ever had."
This was confirmed by carnival chairman Tony Beyer, who said attendance was up by about 34 percent.
"It was absolutely a great success," he said. "The residents of Marshall County really supported it."
Beyer pointed out, "All the money we make, we give away -- without that support we couldn't do it."
The carnival is presented by Family Attractions of Valdosta, Ga. and Beyer said they are great to work with.
Final figures on the amount raised by Rotary from the barbecue contest and carnival were not available when the Tribune went to press, but Beyer said, "A lot of the money will stay in this county."
