Lewisburg Middle School upcoming eighth grader David Roberts continues to make a name for himself on the gridiron in a national setting as he was recently selected to play in The 5th Annual 2014 "Future Stars" Kentucky vs. Tennessee Future Stars Classic on Saturday June 21 at Kentucky Wesleyan College in Owensboro.

The 6'4 and 246 pound defensive lineman has experienced the bright lights before, participating in The 2014 Eastbay Youth All American game in San Antonio, Texas in January.

The nation's top middle school athletes competed for a spot on the Futures team at four different tryouts across the state with Roberts sparkling at his tryout at Battle Ground Academy in Nashville in April.

"Roberts stood out on both sides of the ball over the weekend as well as last season for Lewisburg Middle School and the coaches on hand at the tryout were drawn to his footwork and play in the trenches," according to a scouting report from youthone.com.

Roberts, who was recently named the Defensive MVP for LMS, played primarily on the defensive side of the ball with the Tigers last season with his stellar play earning him a spot on Team Nashville in Football University's National Championship tournament, where he played mostly offensive line and won the long snapper position.

Top coaching

Roberts will report to camp at the University of Tennessee June 18, where he will stay and practice until they leave for Owensboro.

The eighth grade Future stars will be coached by former UT great Todd Kelly, an All-SEC selection at linebacker and captain of the Vols in 1992.

Kelley was first-round draft choice by the San Francisco 49ers in 1993 and went on to play in Super Bowl XXIX, won by the 49ers over the San Diego Chargers.

Roberts has kept sharp leading up to the Futures game as he just attended Football University at Riverdale High School in Murfreesboro from May 2-4 where he received some invaluable instruction by former NFL Defensive Coach of the Carolina Panthers Odell Jones.

College interest

Roberts has also been contacted by a National College Football Scout, John Corcoran, who is developing a profile on Roberts for National College Recruiters.

Corcoran commented that "he is confident in the strides Dave is making and has several recruiters interested in Dave and they want to come watch him play."
