David Newton Burgess

David Newton Burgess of Waynesboro departed this life on Thursday, June 12, 2014, at his home, at the age of 76 years, eight months, 28 days.

He was born Sept. 15, 1937, in Cornersville, the son of the late Claude Lee and Ina Lou Poarch Burgess. He was united in marriage to Judy Brewer on June 18, 1973.

Mr. Burgess was a retired furniture repairman and deliveryman for Coble Furniture Center, had worked with Dairyman, Inc. and Genesco Shoe Manufacturing in Franklin; served in the United States Army; and was a member of the Wayne Furnace Church of Christ in Waynesboro, Tennessee.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Burgess was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Burgess, and a sister, Margaret Burgess Gillam.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Brewer Burgess of Waynesboro; sons, Kevin Burgess of Waynesboro, and Michael and Kenneth Burgess, both of Lewisburg; daughters, Heather Breeden of Waynesboro, Melissa Dana of Louisville, Ky., and Kimberly Gault of Petersburg; a brother, Edward Burgess of Lewisburg; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were Saturday, June 14, at Shackelford Funeral Directors Chapel, Waynesboro, with Cary Crews officiating. Burial with military rites was in the Sunset Park Cemetery, Lewisburg, with Shackelford Funeral Directors, Wayne County, directing.
