Culleoka halts Lady Bulldogs
The Cornersville Lady Bulldogs' offensive frustrations on the pitch continued on Thursday, as they were shutout for the sixth time this season when they dropped a 2-0 decision to the Culleoka Lady Warriors at home.
Cornersville had posted a 2-0-1 record against the Lady Warriors in their last three meetings while outscoring them 13-1 during that span.
Culleoka (1-4-1, 1-4-1 District) reversed that trend on Thursday and grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first half before tacking on an insurance goal late in the second stanza to claim their first victory of the year.
The Lady Bulldogs (0-7, 0-3 District) actually outshot the Lady Warriors 15-13 overall, but were simply unable to convert on a number of close range scoring chances. Autumn Sheroski attempted seven shots to lead Cornersville offensively, while Anna Claire Foster and Lindsey Stampfly fired three shots apiece. Suany Armijo and Moira Borne each took one shot for the Lady Bulldogs as well.
Cornersville's offensive struggles were compounded when starting goaltender Hope Taylor was forced to leave the game early in the first half due to a right leg injury. Marilyn Guzman replaced Taylor in net and finished with eight saves.
Avery Nowlin and Jeannie Auville each scored one goal for Culleoka, while Amber Parisek notched an assist. Lady Warrior goalie Katie Stofel tallied 11 saves en route to recording her first shutout of the season.
After Foster lined a long range shot over the top of the net in the 12th minute, Culleoka nearly got on the board in the 18th minute, but saw a 30-yard shot by Auville bounce off the top post of the Lady Bulldog goal.
Stofel then caught a close range shot by Stampfly on a Cornersville corner kick play in the 21st minute before thwarting a pair of scoring attempts by Foster and Sheroski over the next seven minutes.
In the 29th minute, the Lady Warriors broke the stalemate when Nowlin and Parisek teamed up for a goal to give Culleoka a 1-0 lead. Nowlin outran a Lady Bulldog defender to a Parisek pass in the middle of the field prior to dribbling in and firing a low, skidding shot into the lower, left hand corner of the net.
Guzman then caught a line drive shot by Nowlin in the 38th minute to keep the deficit at one before Stofel stopped a couple of shots by Borne and Sheroski late in the waning moments of the first half.
The Lady Bulldogs appeared to tie the game early in the second half when Armijo kicked in a rebound in front of the net after a shot by Sheroski bounced off Stofel's hands in the 45th minute. The referee, however, ruled that Stofel had possession of the ball and disallowed the goal.
Cornersville had another chance to knot up the game midway through the second half when Sheroski had a wide open look in front of the net after receiving a pass from Foster, but her shot sailed wide right of the goal.
The Lady Warriors then effectively put the game out of reach by tallying a goal in the 69th minute to open up a 2-0 advantage. After Culleoka was awarded a corner kick, Auville lofted a high, arching shot towards the left post that bounced off of Guzman's hands and into the back of the net.
