Lady Bulldogs knocked from playoffs

The Cornersville Lady Bulldogs were eliminated from the postseason on Thursday afternoon when they were defeated 4-1 on their home pitch by Hickman County (4-5-4) in the first round of the District 11-A-AA tournament.

Cornersville (1-10-2) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but Hickman County tallied two goals over the next 25 minutes to take a 2-1 lead into the break before outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 2-0 in the second half to earn their fourth victory of the season.

Lost chances

Although Cornersville outshot Hickman County 18-14 overall, they were unable to convert on a number of quality scoring chances.

Junior midfielder Anna Claire Foster scored the Lady Bulldogs lone goal of the contest, while Suany Armijo registered an assist. Foster also attempted a team high six shots and Autumn Sheroski followed with four shots. Alexis Easterwood and Lyndsey Stampfly took three shots apiece for Cornersville as well, while Gloria Armijo and Moira Borne each recorded one shot. Elizabeth Taylor started at goaltender for the Lady Bulldogs and recorded five saves.

Cortnie Fitts tallied two goals to lead Hickman County's offensive attack. Kristen Witherspoon and Ashley Swaw also notched one goal apiece for HCHS, while Julia Williams dished out an assist. Hickman County goalie Cassidy Hurst turned in a strong performance and finished with nine saves.

Early charge

Cornersville controlled the action early on and grabbed a 1-0 lead when Armijo and Foster teamed up for a goal in the 11th minute. After running down a loose ball in the middle of the field, Palma made a pass back to Foster, who launched a 25-yard shot into the upper right hand corner of the net.

The Lady Bulldogs lead would prove to be short lived, as Fitts rifled a 15-yard shot into the right corner of the net in the 13th minute after receiving a pass from Williams on the left side of the field.

Hurst then caught a couple of long range shots by Foster before stopping two shots by Easterwood late in the first half.

Those missed opportunities came back to haunt Cornersville in the 36th minute when Fitts ran down a loose ball on the right side of the field and fired a 20-yard shot into the far corner of the goal to give Hickman County a 2-1 advantage at the break.

Pulling away

Witherspoon stretched HCHS' lead to 3-1 midway through the second half by making a run down the middle of the field and lining a shot just underneath the top post of the net.

After blocking a close range shot by Stampfly in the 64th minute, Hurst caught a direct kick by Foster in the 72nd minute to maintain Hickman County's two-goal lead.

Taylor then thwarted a close range scoring opportunity by Fitts in the 74th minute, but Hickman County tacked on another goal in the 77th minute to cement their 4-1 win when Swaw kicked in a rebound from point blank range after Taylor mishandled a long direct kick by Fitts.
