FMS Lady Rockets sputter in Unionville
The FMS Lady Rockets could not get their offense on track in Unionville Thursday night as they fell behind early and never caught up in a 36-23 loss to Community.
The Viqueens, celebrating their Middle School Homecoming night before the game, came out inspired as Lexie Cagle drilled a 3-pointer on the first possession of the game.
Two Jordan Langley free throws made it 5-0, and after an early Forrest timeout, the Lady Rockets could not score and Cagle made two more free throws for the Viqueens.
FMS turned the ball over to Anna Katherine Lemmons, who drove in for a lay-up, pushing the Community lead to 9-0.
First LMS score
With 58.3 seconds remaining in the first quarter, Anna Blanton finally busted the Forrest scoring drought with a 3-pointer, making it 9-3.
The Viqueens kept on the gas, scoring twice more before the first period ended, putting the Lady Rockets in a 13-3 hole after the first six minutes.
The second quarter was a repeat of the first as the Viqueens outscored FMS 7-0 before Emily Yost knocked bucket in the paint for the Lady Rockets with just over a minute to play in the period.
Kaitlin Leverette proceeded to bang home a three-bomb for Community before the first half ended on an Ally Blanton 3-pointer, making it 25-8.
Stevie Ray scored in the low post for FMS to start the second half, and after a Lemmons bucket in the post for Community, Sydney Hill scored in the paint, making it a 27-12 contest.
FMS went ice-cold on offense once again, while Community scored one more basket by Lemmons to take a 29-12 lead, entering the final six minutes of play.
The Viqueens also scored the first six points of the fourth quarter, opening up a big 33-12 lead.
Ray would hit one of two from the free throw line moments later and after a Community missed shot, Anna Blanton banged home a 3-pointer for FMS.
Twin sister Ally would follow with another long bomb, making it 33-19.
Closing it out
A Ray basket and a jumper by Kennedy Gillespie would be the last of the scoring for the Lady Rockets, who fell by the 13-point margin.
The Blanton twins both had six points on a pair of 3-pointers each for FMS, While Ray finished with five points, and Hill, Kennedy Gillespie, and Yost all ended up with a deuce.
Haley Bobo led all scorers in the contest with 10 points, Lemmons finished with eight, Leverette seven, Langley six, and Cagle rounded out the scoring for Community with five points.
FMS will be back in action Monday night when they make the long trek to Huntland.
