CMS girls hand Richland defeat
The Cornersville Middle School Lady Bulldogs handed Richland just their second loss of the season on Thursday when they defeated the Lady Raiders 32-25 at home on 8th grade night to earn a split in the season series.
After taking an 18-16 lead into the break, the Lady Bulldogs (8-6) slowly pulled away from Richland (10-2) in the second half by outscoring the Lady Raiders 14-9 over the final two quarters to claim the seven-point win.
"We haven't had the season that we planned, but I told the girls that we can be proud of the way that we play if we play hard and compete. They did that tonight. It was all about their mentality," said CMS coach Peyton Newton.
Although Richland held a 1-0 edge in three-pointers, Cornersville finished with a 9-8 advantage in field goals while outscoring the Lady Raiders 14-8 at the foul line. The Lady Bulldogs also outrebounded Richland 29-14 and held a commanding 15-2 edge on the offensive boards.
Forward Sarah Beth Prosser recorded a double-double and spearheaded CMS' offensive attack by pouring in a game high 16 points and grabbing 19 rebounds to go along with three steals.
"Sarah Beth was one of those 8th graders that didn't want 8th grade night to be over. She really came up big for us," said Newton.
Gabby King followed Prosser with seven points, five steals, and three assists, while Demi Peters tallied six points. Sydney Wilson and Sierra Kinder chipped in two and one point respectively for Cornersville as well.
Riley Neely paced Richland with nine points, while Caylee Parker and Hope Callahan added five points apiece. Olivia Newton also notched four points for the Lady Raiders and Lilli Greene had two points.
Back and forth
The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to an early 4-1 lead thanks to a pair of layups by Prosser and King before Richland tallied four of the next five points to tie the game at 5-5 midway through the first quarter.
Cornersville then put together a 9-2 run behind seven points from Prosser to seize a 14-7 advantage midway through the second period, but the Lady Raiders quickly counterpunched and outscored CMS 9-2 over the next 2:46 to knot the game at 16-16.
After King scored on a layup in the waning moments of the half to give the Lady Bulldogs an 18-16 lead at intermission, Prosser hit one-of-two free throws at the start of the third quarter to make it 19-16.
Richland retied the game at 20-20 midway through the third period on baskets by Neely and Parker, but Cornersville closed the stanza with a 6-0 spurt on the strength of three points apiece from King and Prosser to grab a 26-20 lead.
The Lady Raiders narrowed the gap to 27-23 early in the fourth quarter with the aid of three free throws before Peters scored on a layup to stretch CMS' lead to 29-25 with 2:50 left..
Following a layup by Neely, which cut the deficit to 29-25, the Lady Bulldogs locked down defensively and held Richland scoreless over the final 2:32 while notching the final three points of the contest on two King free throws and a foul shot by Prosser to seal their 32-25 victory.
