Mount Vernon church was founded over 100 years ago
In 1873, a small band of people, under the leadership of Rev. Wayart, birthed what is known today as Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church of Chapel Hill.
With much zeal and real sacrifice, this small congregation erected a church building built of logs on land 2 1/2 miles north of Chapel Hill, donated by Henry Sheffield. During the early 1900s, Moumt Vernon served as a school to educate many of the black children in that area.
In August 1910, under the pastorate of Rev. Jim Butler the congregation watehed in tcars as fire destroyed their bnilding. A brush harbor was bnilt to conduct service and under the leadership of C.C. Rowland a new church was built in 1911.
In 1935, Mt Vernon began celebrating its annual Homecoming Celebration. This event brought family members and loved ones from near and far. Homecoming is still celebrated every fourth Sunday in May.
In 1957, a new structure was built under the leadership of Rev. B. Moore. Rev. Saul Turner took leadership in 1969. Then Rev. Kenneth J. McEastland was called to pastor Mount Vernon. Under his leadership, Mount Vernon became the most progressive church in the area.
Mount Vernon prospered more spiritually, numerically and financially than ever before. Our ministry was heard on Radio Broadcast WNQU throughout Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky.
The old church was deteriorating and the building was vacated for safety reasons. Mount Vernon then began worshiping at the old Forrest High School cafeteria. After 11-12 months we were blessed to build a new sanctuary. The building was dedicated to the glory of God on Nov. 4, 1989.
Shortly after that, Rev. McEastland left Mount Vernon and God sent Rev. Phillips to he the new pastor. Under his leadership we continued to prosper and grow as a church.
A few years later Mount Vernon was faced with finding a new pastor when Rev. Phillips decided to leave. God sent Rev. Terry Haynes to be the next pastor of Mount Vernon. In September 1998 Mount Vernon was blessed with Rev. Michael T . James as its pastor. Since Pastor James has been at Mount
Vernon, we have continued to grow spiritually, financially and numerically.
Under the leadership of Pastor James, new ministries have been implemented and are being birthed at the present. Some of these include the Pastor's Council, Deacon Family Ministry, Women's Ministry, Fishers of Men Evangelistic Ministry and the Doers of the Word College Ministry. Pastor .James continues to challenge us to become involved in all facets of our ministry, commit ourselves to excellence and obedience to the word of God.
It is our intent to become a "live" church who believes in the infallible word of God and to embrace the truth with our whole mind, body, soul and spirit. Here at Mount Vernon, our desire is to lift up the name of .Jesus Christ in our actions, our attitudes, and in our atmosphere of worship.
We at Mount Vernon continue to look to the Lord for guidance and direction. At Mount Vernon, we believe, "God loves you and so do we."
