On Saturday, the Cornersville Middle School Lady Bulldogs recorded their third win of the season when they rallied to defeat the Richland Lady Raiders 15-13 at home.

Richland (3-4) held a 12-9 lead through the first two and a half innings of play, but Cornersville relief pitcher Payton Salsman came in and cooled down the Lady Raiders' bats while the Lady Bulldogs (3-4) outscored their archrival 6-1 the rest of the way to pull out the victory.

Third win

Cornersville relief pitcher Payton Salsman allowed just one unearned run over 4 1/3 innings to help lead the Lady Bulldogs to a 15-13 comeback win over Richland.

Salsman earned her third win of the year by yielding just one unearned run in four and a third innings of work on only two hits. CMS starting pitcher Brooke King had to settle for the no decision after yielding 12 runs, six earned, over two and two-third innings on 12 hits and a walk.

"Payton did good job today. Both of my pitchers are young, but they listen and make adjustments. I told Brooke that not all those runs were on her because our defense made some errors," said Cornersville coach Sherry Campbell. "Payton is a little more experienced than Brook and has a couple of different pitches that she throws well."

T.P. Clark (2 RBI) and Halle Braden registered three hits apiece to lead Richland offensively, while Lillie Greene (1 RBI), Olivia Newton (1 RBI), and starting hurler Caylee Parker each had two hits.

Walking in

The Lady Bulldogs tallied nine hits overall but were also aided by eight walks and four Lady Raider errors. Parker went the distance in the circle for the Lady Raiders and suffered the loss.

Robin Oberlander did the most damage at the plate for CMS by going 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, and 4 RBI. Gabby King (2 RBI) and Daisy Braden notched two hits apiece for Cornersville as well, while Millie Davis (1 RBI), Natalie Hagerdon, and Salsman each had one hit.

Richland scored two runs in the top of the first inning to grab an early 2-0 lead, but the Lady Bulldogs crossed home plate five times in the bottom half of the frame behind three walks, an error, a hit batsman, and an Oberlander three-run double to pull ahead 5-2.

After the Lady Raiders pushed across five runs in the top of the second to grab a 7-5 advantage, Cornersville plated four runs in the bottom of the inning thanks to a single by Daisy Braden, a Hagerdon bunt single, a RBI groundout by Gabby King, two walks, a RBI single by Oberlander, and two errors to seize a 9-7 lead.

Catching up

Richland scored five more runs in the top of the third to claim a 12-9 lead before the Lady Bulldogs scratched out two runs in the bottom half of the frame on a RBI infield single by Davis and an Anna Allen RBI groundout to narrow the gap to 12-11.

Cornersville then took a 13-12 lead by scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth with the aid of a Gabby King walk, an error, and four wild pitches.

The Lady Raiders notched a run in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 13-13, but the Lady Bulldogs pushed across two more runs in the bottom of the inning to open up a 15-13 advantage.

After Braden roped a triple into the left centerfield gap to leadoff the frame, Hagerdon reached base on a fielder's choice when Richland unsuccessfully tried to throw out Branden at third. King then drove in Braden with a RBI infield single before Hagerdon came home on a RBI fielder's choice by Sarah Beth Prosser.

In the top of the seventh, Salsman worked around a leadoff bunt single by Greene with the help of a 6-3 double play to wrap up the win for Cornersville.
