Forrest shakes off sand, run-rules Page
The Forrest Lady Rockets, coming off a successful road trip in Panama City, shook off some Florida sand before blasting Page 8-0 in five innings Wednesday night in Chapel Hill.
"I thought we were kind of sluggish, but you can expect that with a week's layoff," said Forrest coach Becky Cheatham. "It took us a while to get the bats rolling. I would like to see us be a little bit more aggressive at the plate, when that strike comes across, jump on it and get the job done then."
Shoo-in District 9-A Player of the Year Katie Warrick led the Forrest squad on offense, clobbering her 44th career homerun in the game and Warrick tossed four innings of one-hit ball in the circle for the Lady Rockets.
After a scoreless first inning, Forrest snatched the early lead with a five-run second inning as Lainey Mays led off with a bunt single and stole second base.
"We had a good warmup, but were kind of slow getting in to it," said Forrest senior Briar Mays. "We would speed up, do what we needed to do and we would kind of come back and then speed up again, so we just have to be more constant in the attack."
After a fly out, Jordan Yelensky reached on a Page infield error before Piper Elmore laid down a squeeze bunt that scored Mays from third.
Kelsie Darnell came up with a big two-run double to left field and stole second.
Darnell would score on a Kiyoko Puca infield single before Warrick knocked Puca home with a laser off the center field fence, making it 5-0.
Page came up with its only hit of the game in the top of the third inning with one out when Lauren McDonald ripped a double to center field.
McDonald was caught in run-down moments later and the inning ended on a Warrick strikeout.
Lainey Mays got on base again via a base on balls to lead off the home half of the third inning, stole second and raced all the way home on a Savannah Brothers fielder's choice RBI.
Warrick set down Page 1-2-3 in the fourth and Samantha King came to the circle for Forrest in the fifth and struck out two out of the three batters she faced.
Warrick led off the bottom of the fifth with a low flying missile over the center field fence and King ended the game with moonshot dinger way over the leftfield fence.
Warrick struck out four and walked one Page batter in her four innings of the work.
"We need to be challenged and I want us to be at our best and be more aggressive," said Cheatham. "I think we will, we are 10 games in, but there has been so such time in between games, it's hard to get some consistency."
The undefeated Lady Rockets (11-0, 5-0) will get tested at the Raptor Classic on Friday when they face Franklin and Riverdale at Crocket Park in Brentwood with first game scheduled for 4 p.m.
"This is really exciting and we will take this as serious as we took Rutherford," said Briar Mays "We will have to come out strong and stay strong and not worry if we get down, so we just have to stay positive because we know we can do it. It's just getting in there and actually doing it."
