Grayson Whaley tossed a seven-inning complete game Tuesday for the Elks, who outlasted Marshall Medical center (MMC) 4-3 in the second game of a Marshall County Babe Ruth League double-header.

Whaley gave up zero earned runs on six hits, walked three, hit one and struck-out seven MMC batters in the game.

A Preston Shelton two-run double in the first inning, plus a run scored on a passed ball gave the Elks a 3-0 lead.

Quick setdown

Whaley set down MMC 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning and MMC starting pitcher Austin Grubbs did the same to the Elks in the top of the second inning.

Allante Watts banged a two-out single off Whaley in the bottom of the second inning before the big righty whiffed the next MMC batter to end the frame.

Three Elks' batters reached base off Grubbs in the top of the third, but none crossed home plate, keeping the score at 3-0.

Whaley sailed through the bottom of the third inning and Jackson Coward came on for Grubbs in the top of the fourth inning and set down the Elks in order.

Big run

The fourth and fifth innings were scoreless, but in the top of the sixth the Elks scored one unearned run and it would turn out to be the most important run of the game.

Knox Barnes led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a double and would come around to score on a stolen base and an Elks error, making it a 4-2 ballgame.

Bo Vanhooser came to the hill for MMC in the top of the seventh and shut the Elks down.

One-run clash

Watts and Bo Vanhooser banged back-to-back hits to lead off the bottom of the inning before Whaley came up with a strikeout.

Guy Vanhooser followed with a bunt single to load the bases and two runs crossed the plate on an Elks' fielding error, making it a one-run game.

Whaley induced a fly-out to Shelton in center field for out No. 2 and the game ended on a ground ball to Devin Aydelott at shortstop.
