Smith, Lyttle team for no-hitter
Jaylen Smith and Jarvis Lyttle kept their cool with temperatures soaring to August levels in the 90s at the Jonathan D. Hollingsworth Memorial Babe Ruth Field at Lewisburg on Monday.
The two Clint's Air Care (CAC) hurlers combined on a four-inning, no-hitter versus winless A-Plus Collision Center, while the offensive continued to dominate in a 12-1 run-rule win.
Smith tossed the first three innings and gave up one unearned run, struck out five and walked six A-Plus batters.
Lyttle came to the mound in the fourth to finish off the contest, striking out two and issuing two bases on balls.
Smith battled some wildness in the top of the first, walking four batters and uncorking a wild pitch that scored Mitchell Ford from third base.
The damage could have been worse, but an inning ending, double play sent CAC to the plate in the bottom of the frame.
The Chapel Hill squad sent 14 batters to the plate in the inning and scored nine runs on seven hits.
Colby Bluthardt had a two-run single and Dylan Eady, Ethan Mealer and Lyttle all had an RBI in the offensive outburst.
Laramie Plott drew a leadoff walk for A-Plus in the top of the second inning, but a strikeout and another double play ended the inning.
Bluthardt drove home another CAC runner in the bottom of the second inning, while run No.11 came home on a passed ball.
Smith struck out the side in the top of the third inning and drove home a run in the bottom of the frame via a sacrifice fly.
Lyttle closed out the game with a pair of strikeouts in the top of the fourth inning, as CAC remained unbeaten on the season at 10-0.
