Lady Rockets fly high in senior night win
The Forrest Lady Rockets finished off the regular season with a bang, blanking non-conference Webb School 3-0 in Tuesday night's senior celebration at Chapel Hill.
"I'm really happy, I was nervous coming in," senior Anyssa Strong said. "I was just glad we on our last official home game here."
Forrest (6-3-1, 3-0-1) is the top seed from the South Division in the upcoming District 9A-AA Tournament that commences at 6 p.m. Monday night on the Lions Club Memorial Field at Chapel Hill.
"I want to go far this year, I want to go further than we did last year," Strong commented, "I'm just going to hard and do my best and I hope my team will do the same thing."
Forrest controlled the game from the outset, spending much of the first half in Webb's side of the field, but could not get anything in the net versus the Lady Feet from Bedford County.
"We came out playing hard, but I think we started to play their game," Strong said.
Chance after chance went awry for the Lady Rockets as Webb displayed some defense in the face of a continuing wave of Forrest attackers headed towards its goal.
Finally, with 8:40 remaining in the first half, Haley Lowe scored her eighth goal of the season on a long distance shot that was shielded from the Webb goalie.
Forrest had a few more chances to score before the first half ended with the Lady Rockets in front one-nil.
Nineteen seconds into the second half, Brynn Colvin drilled a shot past the Webb keeper to make it a 2-0 contest.
The play on the pitch would open up a bit over the next several minutes as Webb began to get a few scoring opportunities, but Forrest goalie Jasmine Runk was up to the task every time.
At the 15:55 mark of the second half, Colvin netted her team leading 23 goal of the season, making it a 3-0 contest.
The Lady Rockets would cruise home to the senior night win, finishing off an undefeated regular season slate at Forrest.
"I didn't care for the game tonight, it wasn't a fun game for me," Dennis said. "I've been trying to tell the girls, we need to set the pace and we didn't do that tonight."
Runk made seven saves in the contest as she recorded her seventh shutout of the season.
"We have a lot to figure out with injuries---Lainey (Mays) going down tonight didn't help matters any, so we just have to figure out where we are going and what we have to do," Dennis said. "I think we have a good shot at it."
On Monday, Forrest played a make-up game at Giles County where they lost 3-2.
The Lady Bobcats led 2-1 at the half.
Emma Strasser scored to tie the game at 2-2 in the second half, but Giles County tacked on another goal to make the final 3-2.
