The Marshall County Tigers finished in third place at the Region 6A-AA Tournament at Montgomery Bell on Monday, two shots behind second place Stewart County and 38 shots behind defending champion CPA.

"I was happy with the team performance. We were only five strokes worse than district, but Montgomery Bell is a much more difficult course," MCHS coach Alex Phelps said. "I would have loved for one of my other three guys to shoot just a couple strokes better and us finish second, but those are my young guys and it was a great experience for them."

Moving on

Seniors Zach Smith and Wilson Limbaugh both shot 76, which was good enough for a spot in next week's TSSAA Class A-AA Tournament at Willowbrook Golf Club in Manchester.

"My two seniors looked at me at the beginning of the year and told me they were going to state and I looked right back at them and said, 'well we better put in some work'," Phelps said. The last two weeks they stayed after practice and hit putts and wedges and they worked hard and deserve the chance to compete in state. I'm just happy I get to coach them and be apart of this once in a lifetime experience for these kids."

Davis George shot 90 at the region, Tyler Wunderlin had a 94 and Kasey Beard carded a 108.

"We have had a great season so far, we practiced everyday and worked hard to get to where we are," Phelps said. "Our team goal was to finish second in our district and we accomplished that, so it was no doubt a success."

Phelps added, "I especially want to give a huge thank you to Saddle Creek Golf Club for letting us use their facility to help improve our team this year."

Peaking perfectly

Smith and Limbaugh have a lot of experience on the links and the pair has gotten hot at the perfect time as play begins at Willowbrook on Tuesday morning.

"They stack up as well as anyone in the tournament if you want my honest opinion," Phelps said. "I have seen both of these two guys shoot some low scores and I know they are capable of replicating that. We have one week of practice left and we will use every second of it we can."

Limbaugh tees off at 9:50 a.m. and Smith is the foursome behind his Tiger teammate in Tuesday's opening round.
