Lady Rockets beat Creek Wood for first victory
The Forrest Lady Rockets looked to bounce back from a 50-28 drubbing by Houston County earlier Saturday morning by playing a Creek Wood team just two years removed from a state tournament semifinal appearance.
The Lady Rockets came out firing, led by Tamia Northcutt and Caitlyn Yost's seven points each for the 18-11 lead heading into the second quarter.
"We had to come out and not be scared and punch them in the mouth," Yost said. "We had to be focused and not be afraid. When we play scared we make really bad mistakes. We have to play how we know we can. Mindset is everything with this team this year."
The Rockets continued to extend the lead into the second quarter, led by Yost who punished the Red Hawks with 16 first half points to give the home squad a 34-26 lead.
Katey Harmon led the third quarter charge against the Red Hawks by scoring seven of her nine points in the period while the Rockets allowed just seven points to the visitors in the quarter.
"We worked really good as a team tonight," Harmon said. "We came out ready to play unlike our last games and we weren't scared."
Early power pays
The Red Hawks outscored the Lady Rockets in the final period 13-12 behind eight Taylor Moore points, but home team's early dominance allowed Forrest to gain its first win of the season behind 27 points by Yost.
"It feels good that we finally played basketball tonight," Forrest coach Jeremy Jean said. "On offense we attacked the rim, which we haven't done in the past two nights."
Kyleah Hengesbach was lost with an ankle injury late in the contest but still led the Lady Rockets with seven assists and two points, Tamia Northcutt finished with seven points and four assists, and Katey Harmon finished with nine points and five rebounds for the Lady Rockets.
"I hope this does a lot for the confidence because we needed a win," Jean said. "No matter who it's against because we needed a win for them to get some confidence."
