Rockets take big fall vs. Cascade
The Forrest Rockets (1-3) opening the Thanksgiving classic against an old rival, the undefeated Champions from Cascade and the home team could not seem to warm up en route to a 81-38 blowout loss behind 36 combined points from Austin Gentry (19) and Hayden Edmonson (17) for the Champs.
The Champions employed a suffocating full court press to start the contest, forcing the Rockets into an immediate 29-6 first quarter hole of which the boys from Chapel Hill could not seem to find a way out.
Couldn't break it
"They ran a press on us that we just couldn't seem to break," senior forward David Andrews said. "We had an opening in the middle, but there was just nothing we could do and nobody was flashing there."
The Champions continued the pressure in the second period to extend the halftime lead to 50-20.
"In that situation we just have to dig down deep, see who has the heart in them, see who has the fight in them," Andrews explained. "We just have to have the mindset to keep moving forward and see if we can bounce back from this one."
The Rockets showed signs of life on the offensive end in the third quarter by scoring 12 points on the nearly impenetrable Champion press, but the Rockets made too many mistakes to make a serious run losing to Cascade after a much needed win at Cornersville just two days prior.
"We gave them all kind of advantages by turning the ball over as much as we did," Forrest coach Randy Toombs pointed out. "We didn't handle the ball like we were supposed to. It got a little better in the second half, but not a whole lot better."
The Champions held Rocket leading scorer Donnie Murray to just two points and did not allow a single Rocket to reach double figures, who were led by Korbin Brown's seven points.
