The Cornersville Bulldogs ran into a buzz saw on Friday night versus Columbia Academy, getting down immediately and were never able to get back into the game before losing big, 83-37.

The Bulldogs (0-5, 0-3) are winless on the year and have lost the last two games by a combined total of 81 points, while Columbia Academy has won three in a row and are winners of six of its last seven games.

"We didn't do a good job against their pressure," Cornersville coach Jeff Morton said. "If we would have gotten the ball to the middle of the court I think we would have done a better job with their pressure. They extended their lead with their full court defense."

From the start

The Bulldogs from Columbia Academy jumped on Cornersville from the outset, getting the home team down by 20 points four minutes into the game by way of a relenting full court press that forced Cornersville into turnover after turnover to start the game.

Cameron Whittaker takes the ball strong to the dish for two of his four points versus Columbia Academy Tuesday night at Cornersville.

"They scored the first five points on us really quick and we realized they were a great team," freshman guard Eli Woodard said. "We went back to our 2-3 defense and that helped us out a lot."

Cornersville would regroup after a timeout, cutting the lead to just 10 points with six minutes left in the half behind six Austin Ridinger points, three from Eli Woodard and two from Michael Allen.

More confidence

"At that point we realized we could get through their pressure," Allen said. 'We started making better decisions and we were able to get our shots."

Columbia Academy doubled the Bulldogs lead at the half 44-22 and the visitors would coast to any easy victory in the second half by outscoring Cornersville 39-15 the rest of the game.

"They're a very good team," Allen, who finished with six points and three rebounds, said. "It's hard to stop a team like that. We've got to quit turning the ball over and make better passes."

Columbia Academy led by Taylor Thompson's 16 points and Blake Kincaid's 13, shot lights out in the contest missing just nine shots the entire game.

Ridinger and Canner led Cornersville with 10 points apiece in the game.
