Lady Bulldogs on 2-game roll
The Cornersville Lady Bulldogs (3-7) strung together consecutive wins for the first time this season when they hammered the Zion Christian Academy Lady Eagles 67-36 at home on Tuesday night.
Despite getting off to a sluggish start, the Lady Bulldogs built a 30-17 lead in the first half before outscoring Zion Christian 37-19 over the final two quarters to cruise to the 31-point victory.
Bolstered by a 7-of-12 shooting performance in the second quarter, Cornersville finished with a 22-15 advantage in field goals and held an 8-3 edge in 3-pointers. The Lady Bulldogs out rebounded ZCA 39-28, held a 19-6 advantage on the offensive glass and dished out 17 assists as a team.
"I think our ball movement has been getting better each game. We're taking more shots and making more shots, which helps with everyone's confidence," Cornersville coach Peyton Newton said.
The Lady Bulldogs spread the wealth offensively and had 12 players score in the contest. Sophomore center Morgan Terry turned in a solid effort in the paint and led three Cornersville players in double figures with 17 points and nine rebounds. Taylor Powers followed Terry with 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting, while Carson Coble added 12 points, five assists and five steals. Point guard Madison Hopkins tallied only two points, but recorded a team-high eight assists and four steals.
The Lady Bulldogs had great success with their full court press as well and forced 38 Lady Eagle turnovers while notching 16 steals.
"A lot of teams that we play have quicker guards or a good shooter, so we're not usually going to press as much as we did tonight. We'll use our press in the games where we have a good matchup," said Newton.
Anna Grace Fox paced Zion Christian (4-6) with 16 points, while Molly McKelvey and Kaelyn Wilson chipped in six and five points respectively.
The Lady Eagles flew out to an early 6-0 lead before Cornersville tied the game at 6-6 with 2:29 left in the first quarter thanks to treys from Powers and Carly Salsman.
Zion Christian pulled back ahead 8-6 on an offensive put back by Kaelyn Wilson late in the first period, but the Lady Bulldogs put together a 7-0 run behind four points from Coble and a Hope Taylor layup to seize a 13-8 advantage early in the second quarter.
After ZCA narrowed the gap to 13-10 on a layup by Sarah Thomas, Cornersville rattled off 11 straight points with the help of a Terry three-point play, two free throws from Powers and baskets by Sarah Beth Prosser, Samantha Prosser, and Brooke Defoe to stretch its lead to 24-10 with 3:01 left in the second period.
Zion Christian outscored the Lady Bulldogs 7-4 over the next two and a half minutes to whittle the deficit to 28-17, but Emma Mitchell scored on a layup in the waning seconds of the first half to give Cornersville a 30-17 advantage at the break.
Powers drilled a 3-pointer at the start of the third quarter to stretch Cornersville's lead to 33-17 before the Lady Eagles tallied the next five points to close the gap to 33-22.
The Lady Bulldogs then put down the hammer and hit Zion Christian with a 22-3 run on the strength of nine points from Terry, eight points from Coble and a Powers three to forge a 55-25 advantage early in the fourth period.
ZCA notched the next four points to trim the deficit to 55-29 with 5:48 left before Cornersville outscored the Lady Eagles 12-7 the rest of the way with the aid of treys from Daisy Braden and Sydney Wilson to close out their 67-36 triumph.
