MCWC gears up for state tourney
The Marshall County Wrestling Club competed in the Tennessee State Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Region 3 Championship last Saturday at Tullahoma High School and the MCWC had eight wrestlers place in the tournament out of the group of twelve that competed.
"This has been the most the club has had place in the region tournament in the club's history," said club founder Chris Posey. "The club looks forward to an intense, but fruitful state tournament."
Overall, the tournament had over 350 wrestlers from across the Middle Tennessee Region 3 area and two MCWC grapplers came home with first place medals.
Landon Desselle and Nick McClendon stood at the top of the podium, while Mitchell Todd and Liam Bell both finished second after the pair lost in hard fought championship matches.
The region tournament is the qualifying event for the state championships on February 27 at the Williamson County Ag Center.
"The expectation is that we will have several wrestlers who will place in the tournament and our three previous state champions expectations are to wrestle for another championship," Posey stated.
Desselle, McCoy and Liam Bell will all be looking to bring home back-to-back state titles at the tournament.
"We also have Nick McClendon, who has had a great season and has been and will continue to work extremely hard until tournament day," Posey said. "Nick placed fourth last year and our expectation is that he will also compete for a title. There are others who I have not mentioned that could also do very well. The bottom line is that the MCWC can compete with anyone."
The MCWC will be competing in its last regular season tournament this Saturday at Fairview.
