Lady Bucks sweep Calhoun; open TCCAA play this weekend at Jackson State
LYNCHBURG, TN (Feb. 29, 2016) -- The Motlow Lady Bucks traveled to Decatur, Ala. and earned a 6-0, 5-3 sweep over non-conference opponent Calhoun Community College Friday, Feb. 26. The games were rescheduled after inclement weather forced their postponement last Tuesday.
Motlow (4-2, 0-0) was originally scheduled to host Gadsden State on Tuesday, Mar. 1, but expected rain forced the games to be moved up to Monday, Feb. 29. The first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1pm at Lady Bucks Field on Motlow's Moore County campus.
After a sporadic preseason due to poor weather, the Lady Bucks are scheduled to open Tennessee Community College Athletic Association (TCCAA) competition when they travel to Jackson this weekend for a four-game series with Jackson State. Friday's doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. and Saturday's twin bill is scheduled for a noon start.
The Lady Bucks jumped on Calhoun for two runs in the first inning and added three more in the fourth and the final run in the seventh. Cameron Pearson (2-2) scattered eight hits and allowed two walks as she went the distance in the circle. Pearson has pitched two shutouts this season and has a sparkling earned run average of 1.88.
Aubrey Crowell continued her torrid start, going 3-4 with two doubles and a pair of runs batted in. Crowell is now hitting .571 and has seven doubles on the year. Ashton Watkins, Caroline Abernethy and Taylor Mitchell each added two hits, and Mitchell, Abernethy and Traci Shelton each drove in a run.
Game two was considerably closer as the two teams swapped the lead four times before the Lady Bucks scored three runs in the fourth inning, the final two on a single by Taylor Wolaver that scored Riley O'Neal and Mitchell. Calhoun had jumped out front 2-0 in the first, then regained the lead 3-2 after three innings.
Riley Long (2-0) got the win for Motlow, allowing six hits in seven innings with a pair of strikeouts. Abernethy had a pair of RBI, including a triple in the two-run third inning. Wolaver raised her season average to .455 with a pair of hits and two RBI. The Lady Bucks are hitting .404 as a team and have seven players batting over .400.
