Mistakes cost Tigers win
Mistakes were costly for the Marshall County Tigers Friday night as they committed five errors and had four passed balls in a 6-5 loss to Tullahoma at Lewisburg.
"Those early mistakes hurt us," said MCHS coach Mike "Monk" Reese. "We battled back and left the bases loaded twice, so we were one hit away."
Freshman Nathan Derryberry made his varsity debut versus the Wildcats, starting the game on the mound for the Tigers and he got out of a first inning jam after Jay Phillips reached on a one out error and took second and third on consecutive passed balls, but Phillips was nailed at home trying to score from third on the second passed ball.
"The guys that pitched for us did OK," Reese said. "That was Derryberry's first start as a Tiger and he was a little nervous. He has a great breaking ball and a good fastball to go with it, he just has to get his command and I think he will get there. That is why he was throwing tonight."
In the top of the third inning Tullahoma broke through, scoring four unearned runs on one hit as the Tigers made four errors.
Marshall County had two hits through the first four innings before posting a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Brett McGehee, who had two hits in the contest, led off the stanza with a base hit and Logan Bailey followed with a walk.
Tullahoma relief pitcher Matthew Meadows struck out the next two MCHS batters, but a base on balls to Madison Peete loaded the sacks full of Tigers with two outs.
Wilson Limbaugh reached on an infield error, scoring McGehee and Bailey scored on an RBI base hit by Austin Wood.
Tullahoma added another run in the top of the seventh inning with Chase Dixon notching an RBI.
Tristan Underwood led off the home half of the seventh with a base hit to left field and Nathan Thomason came in to run for the MCHS first baseman.
A pop-up to the Tullahoma catcher was out number one before Wood walked to load the bases.
Stuart Warner was hit by a pitch to drive in Bailey before a strikeout left the Tigers with just one more out.
McGehee followed with a two-run double in the right/center field gap, scoring both runners to make it a 6-5 ballgame, but the game ended on a Marshall County strikeout.
"We have won a couple of ballgames like this, we won the other night 1-0, but we have also lost two like this," Reese said. "Next week we will be off a couple days and we have to continue to work on the fundamentals and we do that every chance we get."
"We have to work on squaring ourselves up and making good throws, looking the ball in and our pitchers have got to make good pitches and we have to work on our mental approach at the plate and if we do all that we will be OK. I'm excited about this team."
