Mt. Pleasant tops Lady Bulldogs
Rivalries don't have to be ancient.
From March 30, 2010 to March 27, 2014 the Cornersville Lady Bulldogs dominated District 11-A foe Mt. Pleasant 10-0, but since that 4-2 win at Maury County two years ago, the Lady Tigers have knocked Cornersville out of the district tournament twice and have won four-of-seven games in the series.
The latest setback for Cornersville was a heartbreaker, losing 2-0 in 9 innings in Frog Bottom Tuesday night.
"It was a good game," Cornersville coach Eric Crabtree said. "We are still a young team and we are still good."
It was an old-fashioned duel in the circle as both starting pitchers performed magnificently, going the distance in the contest.
"The pitching was phenomenal today and the defense was good, it was just a good game," Crabtree said.
On the mound
Cornersville starter Kirsten Young gave up four hits and struck out 12 Mt. Pleasant batters, but made one mistake, a costly throwing error in the top of the ninth inning.
Mt. Pleasant ace Kaylee Davis tossed the shut-out, surrendering six hits to the Lady Dawgs, while striking out five and walking one.
The Lady Bulldogs also left five runners in scoring position in the game, including two at third base.
"They had the timely hitting, we hit the ball, but just not when we needed to," Crabtree said.
Hard to beat
Young was nearly untouchable over the first 4 2/3 innings, retiring 14 batters in a row, including eight strikeouts until she gave up back-to-back hits to Lauren Kelley and Cheyenne Munden.
No damage was done as Young got the next batter on a grounder back to the circle to end the inning.
Meanwhile, Davis was pitching well, but escaped trouble in the first four innings as Cornersville left at least one runner in scoring position all four frames.
"Everything we hit, they caught," Crabtree said. "It was a good game, we can't complain about it, that's why you play the game."
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Davis gave up a one-out triple to Carson Coble before escaping on a pop-up to the shortstop and an inning ending strikeout.
Mt. Pleasant threatened in the top of the seventh inning with a runner on second base and one out, but a pair of ground outs extinguished the Lady Tigers' attempt to score the first run of the game.
Davis set down Cornersville 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh and the game went to extra innings.
Lady Tigers score
Neither pitcher allowed a base runner in the eighth inning, but in the top of the ninth, Allyssa Lemay led off with a base hit to center field for Mt. Pleasant.
Rebecca Holder moved Lemay to second on a sacrifice bunt before Kaylee Davis hit a grounder back to the circle that Young fielded, but she threw wildly to first and Lemay scored, making it 1-0.
Madi Hay came in to run for Kaylee Davis and went to second on a groundout before Mabry Davis stepped in the batter's box and drilled a double down the left field line, scoring Hay to give the Lady Tigers a 2-0 lead.
Coble came up with a two-out double in the home half of the ninth to keep the game alive, but a pop-up to the pitcher ended the contest.
"It's going to be the same way in the district tournament between us, Mt. Pleasant and Columbia Academy," Crabtree said. "Only two of us will move on."
Coble had two hits for Cornersville (1-2, 1-1) and Hannah Singleton, Madison Spivey, Emma Mitchell and Micaela King had one hit apiece.
Mt. Pleasant (3-1, 2-0) got one hit apiece from Lemay, Mabry Davis, Munden and Kelley.
