The Forrest Rockets went on the road for a pair of late week games prior to spring break and came away with a split in the Jim Painter Classic, a tribute to the late Columbia State Community College baseball coach.

The Rockets opened up versus Summit at Columbia Central on Thursday and thanks to big five-run third inning, including a three-run blast by catcher Boone Sweeney, Forrest snatched a 5-3 comeback win over the Spartans.

Big win

Junior Jordan Jent picked up the win on the hill for the Rockets, tossing 4 2/3 innings before Alex Brewer came on for the save.

Jent gave up three earned runs on six hits, while striking out one and walking five Spartan hitters for his first varsity triumph.

Brewer closed the door with a 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, surrendering just one hit, striking out four and walking one.

Landen Jones had two hits in the contest and Sweeney, Jonathan Lykins, Bryce Oliver and Ryan Yelensky all had one hit apiece.

Lions roar

Forrest took on host Columbia Central on Friday night and after taking an early 3-0 lead, the Lions came up with a five-run fifth inning and two more in the sixth to take a 7-4 win in six innings.

A Brewer RBI fielder's choice in the top of third inning got the Rockets on the board and RBI by Oliver and Yelensky in the fourth inning gave the Rockets a 3-0 lead.

Yelensky, who started on the mound for Forrest sailed through the first four innings before loading the bases on two walks and a hit batsman in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Lions took advantage of the free passes, knocking Yelensky out of the game and putting up five runs on three hits with the eventual winning run coming on a base on balls to Kade Bowden with the bases loaded.

Forrest (6-3, 2-0) had eight hits in the game with Yelensky, Sweeney and Slayton Wild producing two hits apiece, while Jacob Jones and Lykins having one base knock each.

The Rockets have a few days off for the break before taking the diamond on Thursday in the Warrior Spring Classic where they take on the Lebanon Blue Devils at Blackmon High School with the first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.

Forrest continues tournament play on Saturday when they battle with the Briarcrest Christian School Saints at Wilson Central at 3 p.m.
