Tigerettes claim tournament title
The Marshall County Tigerettes traveled to Clarksville last weekend and posted a 5-1 mark, including a 2-0 win over Clarksville NW in the Silver Division championship game.
"I thought we did great this weekend," MCHS coach Heather Denton said. "We lost to Clarksville Northwest in pool play, but then we beat them when it really mattered."
Pitching was the key for the Tigerettes as Denton got solid efforts from Halle Chapman, Marlee Woodard and Brooklin Conger.
"Our pitchers did great this weekend, they let their defense work which is one of their goals for every game," Denton said.
Conger tossed 15 scoreless innings and won three games, including a two-hit shutout in the title game over Clarksville NW. "Brooklin pitched lights out in the championship game for us and her drop ball was phenomenal on Saturday," Denton said.
Chapman had two wins and Woodard had a save and suffered the only loss, but did not give up an earned run in the defeat.
Batters on target
The Marshall County bats supplemented the outstanding pitching performances as the Tigerettes got RBI production up and down the entire lineup.
"Some of the games our hitters had to get adjusted to the pitching, but once we did we hit hard shots," Denton said "I was proud that our hitters made adjustments and battled back."
After a solid pool play showing, Conger tossed a no-hitter in a 12-0 shutout over Clarksville Academy.
Leah Hollingsworth went a perfect 4-for-4 in the contest and Sydne Solomon knocked a three-run homerun.
Marshall County took on Wayne County next and slipped by the Lady Wildcats 6-5 as Chapman and Woodard tossed two innings apiece in the game and Solomon drove in three runs.
Seven players in the starting lineup had one hit apiece for MCHS, who scored six runs in the second inning and then held on for the victory that put them in the title game versus Clarksville NW.
It was a pitcher's duel and Conger dominated the fight, tossing six innings of two-hit ball, while striking out six and walking zero Northwest batters in the efficient effort in the circle.
Hannah Sheppard capped off a big weekend at the plate with a solo homerun in the fifth inning to make it 1-0, while Lexie Cashion and Taylor Walls added RBI in the win.
"Winning the tournament gives us tons of momentum going into a tough April," Denton said. "We have two district games this week and three more next week. We play Giles County Tuesday which has been a district powerhouse and play Cascade Thursday. Cascade has not lost a district game yet."
