Since the Cornersville-Marshall County series was revived back in the 2013 every game has been a battle for county supremacy for top dog in the talent rich southern Middle Tennessee county with Marshall County (17-5, 5-2) taking two close games in 2015, Cornersville (7-6, 3-3) winning both contests in 2014, and the Tigers winning the series 2-0 in 2013.

The 2016 series will belong to the Tigerettes as Marlee Woodard pitched a three-hit shutout and the blue and white walked away with the 3-0 victory after a 7-3 victory at Cornersville earlier in the season.

In-county win

"Every game is a big game for us, but of course it's nice to win within the county," MCHS coach Heather Denton explained. "The not good part of the game was our first baseman got hurt. Taylor (Walls) is out a week with a concussion."

Walls injury comes at an inopportune time for the Tigerettes as Marshall County embarks on the last few games of the schedule looking to beat out Page for the second seed in the District 12AA tournament with matches against last place Giles County and undefeated Cascade, which beat the Tigerettes 3-1 three weeks prior.

The Lady Dawgs have now lost two straight games after a four game winning streak in wins over 2A Spring Hill and an impressive 1-0 win over district power Mt. Pleasant.

Freshman stars

A pair of freshmen were instrumental in staving off the Bulldog rally as Woodard allowed just three hits against a powerful Cornersville offensive line-up and Lexi Cashion gave the home team some breathing room in the sixth inning, coming up with a big hit to score two runs that led to the 3-0 final.

"We won. A win is always good," Denton said. "Defense was solid and pitching was awesome. Marlee Woodard only gave up three hits. You can't ask for much more. Lexi Cashion came up with a big hit in the sixth to add two more runs to our lead. "

The Tigerettes romped CPA 17-3 on Monday to earn its sixth district win of the season and the third win in a row with just four games remaining.

Looking ahead

With a win over Cascade on Thursday at Bell Buckle, the Tigerettes would be assured at least a share of second place in the district as two-loss Page has one game remaining against the first place Champions to end the regular season.

"The team is feeling good," Denton added. "They are hitting the ball well and really starting to gel. We have great team chemistry. Every game we are looking for ways to improve and become a solid ball team."

Carson Coble had one of the three hits by the Lady Dawgs versus the Tigerettes.

Cornersville has three games remaining with a game against Santa Fe, a home and away series with Culleoka, who along with Santa Fe, resides in the bottom of the 11A standings, giving the Lady Dawgs a great opportunity to notch three more wins heading into the tournament.

As always with Marshall County softball, along with northern Marshall County powerhouse Forrest, all three county teams head into tournament time with great chances at making waves in the district, region, and state tournaments.
